Brief Biology:
Adults are about 1/2 inch in length. They have a distinctive color or red and black with thin red lines
on the top portion of their body. This pest is a nuisance pest, but not harmful. Boxelder beetles are in great numbers
when its warm outside and occasionally find their way inside the home for a place to overwinter. They will not breed indoors.
They do not cause structural damage, but you may have problems with fecal droppings on interior furniture or walls.
Treatment
Methods:
If you get rid of Female Boxelder trees, you could avoid infestations. Male trees should be purchased from nursuries.
Chemical control can be accomplished by spraying the trees in the summer and fall with power sprayers. You can vacuum infestation
to decrease boxelder populations. Remember, if you crush them, it could cause staining of your furnishings. Residual Insecticides
are used around the perimeter of the strucutre and interior to control these pests. You want to treat exterior perimeters, soffets,
windows frame and door frames, to control Boxelders. Conduct interior fan sprays to provide an interior barrier with liquid
insecticides as well. Treating during the cold season will not provide control. Apply insecticide where Boxelder Beetles
tend to be located. Winter is when their usually located inside cavities in the home. During the spring and summer, they
are attracted to the warmer temperatures and tend to move towards the warmer tempuratures.
