Brief Biology:

Cicada Killers are one of the largest amoung the wasps.  Color is yellow and black and grow up to 2 inches or larger.  Cicada Killers dig nesting areas in the ground.  Loose soil can be a location of a Cicada killers nest.  They sting a cicada, bring it back to the nest to feed their young.  Cicadas are active during the summer months and can be a nuisance when the locations of nesting areas are located where children play or their nesting locations are anywhere near human activity.  Cicada Killers are usually active every year.  Cicada killers are generally non-aggressive. 

Treatment Methods:

 Cicada killers can be controlled by using a contact killer WaspFreeze, EcoExempt Jet, or CB Stingray.  Treat at night or early in the morning.  Use a hand bellow and apply a dust formulation when they are in the nesting areas.  You want to dust directly into the nesting hole.  You may have to pull some plants back to see the hole, but its there.  Give it a few weeks, and if you continue to see activity, retreat if necessary.  If you see activity the following year, you may want to use a liquid insecticide with residual to kill any newly hatched eggs or larva.  You can take the tip off the sprayer, so the product comes out in a stream form.
