Brief Biology:

Adult Fleas are parasites living on skin or in feathers of birds and feed on the blood of their hosts.  Fleas are vectors (transports disease from one animal to another.) of several diseases; for example, bubonic plague or black death, and murine flea-borne typhus are a couple examples.   Fleas are small black in color, compressed body, with piercing-sucking mouthparts.  They have a 4 stage life-cycle egg, larva, pupa, and adult stage.  Eggs are laid close to the body of the host.  Larval fleas have chewing mouthparts and feed on feces of the adult fleas.  Fleas can walk very well and have great jumping ability (up to 18 inches), so when treatments are conducted, it is advised to treat curtains up to 18 inches in height.   

Treatment Methods:

If you have any pets, you need to treat your animals with Zoecor Pet Spray or Front-Line Plus.  This is very important because the eggs, larva, pupa, and adults need to be controlled as well as the infested structure or yard.  Rodent problems also need to be controlled in conjuction with your flea treatment.  As a professional pest operator, I use Ultracide to control Fleas interior.  Each Can of Ultracide covers a 2200 Square foot home used in basements, crawl spaces, and inside home on carpet, upholstry, 18 inches up curtains, pet bedding.  Use a total release aerosol CB PCO foggers in conjuction with Ultracide when treating enclosed areas.  And Granulars for yard treatments (Talstar PL, DeltaGard) spread with a Scotts Hand Spreader on the exterior of the structure.  Water granules 1/8 - 1/4 inches to activate chemical.  The pest control professionals use a broadcast residual treatment across the yard, which is basically mixing a liquid insecticide Tempo Ultra SC, Bifen I/T, Cyonara, Cykick CS, Cynoff WP, and spray the interior or yard where the flea infestation occurs.  All these liquid insecticides have a residual, which means it provides long-lasting control.
