Brief Biology:

Mosquitoes go through complete Metamorphosis.  The adults look nothing like the young.  Most species of Mosquitoe Larva have an air tube to allow for breathing.  Pupae stage may last a day.   Once the adult is ready to emerge, it climbs out of the pupae casing, unfolds its adult wings and flies out searching for a blood meal.  This process can be completed in as short as an eleven to fourteen day period.  Monthly treatments between March through October are recommended to maintain control of these annoying pests.  Only the females bites.  Both male and female will feed on nectar, but the female needs a blood meal with protein for egg development.  The adult life expectancy is about 3-4 weeks.

Treatment Methods:

First, you need to remove all standing water sources from the property to eliminate breeding grounds.  For example, empty coke cans, removal of tires,  bird baths water (should be changed once a week), drain gutters need to be cleaned and working properly not to hold water for extended periods of time, ect...

Second, you want to locate areas where rain water will stagnate over periods of time once the rain has ceased,  Application of granules, such as Altosid Pro-G or Dr. T's Mosquito Granules are important in these areas because some mosquitoes will drop their eggs near the soil waiting for the rain to continue development. 

Third, you can apply larvacides to areas where development of Mosquitoes occur.

Fourth, Now you can apply a liquid insecticide w/ residual products, such as, Tempo Ultra SC, Suspend SC, Tempo Ultra WP, Bifen I/T, or Cykick CS,  with good knock down effects to control the adult stage of Mosquitoes.  Their are states that apply ULV applications that float thru the air with great knock down abilities; however, you can use a liquid insecticide to accomplish the same task.  When applying liquid insecticide products, make sure you get trees and shrubbery around the treatment area, and treat around the entire structure where mosquitoes rest.  They usually rest under up under leaves, so make sure you get chemical to those areas.  Remember, the liquid insecticides control for the adult stage of mosquitoes.  Apply to all shrubbery, under decks, wood-line to back yard area (up to 8 feet in height).  You want to establish a barrier between your neighbor and yourself.  Now, your neighbors will still continue to be blood meals for the mosquitoes; however, you will have significantly reduced the mosquito populations on your property.

 If you have areas that hold water and cannot be emptied.  Try using BTI Briquets, which is a larvacide and prevents eggs to becoming adult blood-sucking mosquitoes.
