Brief Biology:

 Yellow Jackets are a dangerous wasp located around commericial and residential structures.  These wasps usually nest underground in old rodent borrows, beneath landscape timbers, up in an attic space, or even in a wall of a building.  They can also be located in aireal nests.  Yellow Jackets are extremely aggressive once the nest is disturbed, so you need to be extremely cautious when treating these nests.

Yellow Jacket Control:

As a professional pest control operator,  I will give you some helpful hints on control Yellow Jacket Control using professional do it yourself pest control products.  You need to remember, as professional exterminators, we may use multiple products for one target pest to get the quickest results, so our customers are satisfied the first treatment. From my own experience,  depending on the location (Attic, Ground,  Aireal), I'll use certain products to treat specific sites.  Attic:  you can use DeltaDust or CB PCO Total Release Fogger.  If you are using a dust formulation, fill a J.T.Eaton Hand Bellow 2/3 full with DeltaDust, then turn handbellow where the long metal rod is above the dust chamber and squeeze.  Usually two or three squeezes will provide enough chemical to treat an aireal nest.  You can also treat carpenter bee holes or hornets nests with the same product. Ground: If the Yellow Jackets are located in the ground, make sure to use a pressurized contact aerosol and liquid insecticides.  Find the location where the yellow jackets are entering and exiting the soil.  During the day its like an airport.  Yellow jacket going in and yellow jackets leaving the ground, and the hole is about the diameter of a quarter.  Treat at night when the yellow jackets are less active, mix in an empty milk jug at the proper concentration.  We use Tempo Ultra SC or Suspend SC. Aireal:  Wasp Freeze (Don't stand under the nest because when you spray the Wasp Freeze, the target pest usually drops straight down from the nest, then flies out.  You can also get some of the chemical in your eye which could cause eye irrataion.  When treating ground locations, mix a gallon of chemical in a milk jug, then place all the chemical in the nest (drenching technique), then check the nest the next day for activity.  It would be beneficial to have Wasp Freeze with you just in case a Yellow Jacket is able to exit the nest.  I have found very good control using the drenching technique.  Treat nest at night when the nest is less active.  If yellow jacket control products are needed to prevent yellow jackets from entering or exiting the home, you want to use  DeltaDust and a hand bellow.  For example, a soffet area or your rock veneer!  I have seen yellow jackets falling out of the air returns and around canned lights in the home and fling all around the house.  All you need to do is take your hand bellow and place some DeltaDust around the nest opening, you can place some dirt on the entrance area to prevent Yellow Jackets from coming out to sting you (useWasp Freeze for Yellow Jackets exiting nest area to prevent stinging) and  this will allow for all the Yellow Jackets to contact the dust.  When using dust, this technique will give you the best control.  Retreatments may be required to gain 100% control.  Wettable powders or suspend concentrates can also be used by drenching the nest area where yellow jackets are active.  Aireal nests can be treated with an aerosol contact spray.  It’s a good idea to locate the nest opening during the daytime and treat the nest at night.  Treatments should be performed late at night because most of the yellow jackets are in the nest, and its less active.
